Student Research Contest

The Twenty-Third Annual CCSE: Southeastern Student Research Contest will be held in 2022. It promises to be larger and more engaging than ever. See the details below, and please contact Student Research Contest Chair Chris Healy (chris.healy@furman.edu) with any questions.

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Students who are undergraduates, or were undergraduates in the spring immediately preceding the conference are eligible to participate.
  • Submissions are to be in the form of 1-2 page extended abstracts, not full papers. (However, students are invited to submit full papers through the regular submission process.)
  • A member of the faculty from the student's institution must be listed as a reference with every submission.
  • Co- authorship is permitted, however a maximum of one entry per student is allowed.
  • A faculty member may be listed as co-author, although a student must be the lead author. [Please note this is a change from prior years.]
  • There is no charge to enter. However, authors of accepted submissions must register for the conference at the student rate.

Submission

  • Send a 1-2 page extended abstract (not a full paper) to:
    chris.healy@furman.edu OR

    Dr. Chris Healy
    Student Research Contest Chair
    Dept. of Computer Science
    Furman University
    Greenville, SC 29613

    E-mail submission preferred
  • The deadline for receipt is September 23, 2022
  • Please do not submit an abstract if you cannot attend the conference.

Note: Please do not send submissions to the Program Co-chairs.

Judging and Awards

  • A panel of referees will evaluate all submissions prior to the contest for basic acceptance (much the same way that regular papers are refereed). Evaluation criteria will include significance of the research, thoroughness and accuracy of the research, as well as written expression of the work.
  • The authors of all accepted abstracts will be invited to make poster presentations during and in between the Friday afternoon conference sessions. Invited authors will be notified by the last day of December prior to the conference. All invited authors are expected to attend the conference to make the poster presentation.
  • Based on the poster presentation as well as the original criteria, the referees will select five finalists. These five students will give a full presentation of their work during the morning session on Saturday of the conference (prior to the programming contest).
  • The top three winners will be announced in a ceremony at the conclusion of the conference.
  • In addition to prizes arranged by the conference committee through local sponsorship, the first place winner will receive a prize of $75, the second place winner $50 and the third place winner $25. Cash prizes are provided through the generous sponsorship of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE).
  • Accepted abstracts will be published in an addendum to the conference proceedings, and at the conference web site. They will not appear in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges, however.

Additional Benefits

Participants whose submissions are selected for the poster display must register for the conference at the student rate, giving them access to all sessions, exhibits and keynote addresses. In addition, they receive a Saturday luncheon ticket and a copy of an addendum to the proceedings containing all selected abstracts. A banquet ticket is not included for student research contest participants, but may be purchased separately upon registration. All participants (registered for the conference) are cordially invited to a pizza party on Friday, January 22. This event will take place in TBD, and will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (overlapping with the conference banquet). Drop in any time. The last batch of pizzas is scheduled to be delivered at 7:30.
